Marble Fire Surround

With the stove sorted, the hunt for a fire surround begun. Unlike the stove we knew what we wanted – a white marble, Victorian style surround. There were quite a few on eBay with buy it now prices around £1000, however we set ourselves a budget of £350 so we had to think a bit more laterally- gumtree, the Friday ad’s, auctions and antique fairs, however we found nothing. Then I spotted a fire surround with insert on eBay that was being auctioned. So it was added to the watch list and a last minute bid of £450 was submitted and we snapped it up at £380. I know this was over our budget but we won’t be needing the cast iron insert so that can be put back on eBay and hopefully the difference can be recouped.

Here are some pictures of the surround going in.

The brickwork was so bad at the sides we had to install a special heat boarding

And here it is all installed with the slate hearth polished ready for the stove.
